Over the years, The Afiya Center has been successful in creating positive change in women’s lives through the creation of microeconomic projects that are designed to promote entrepreneur enterprise and improve the health outcomes of poverty stricken women living with HIV/AIDS. The Afiya Center’s mission is to end reproductive oppression and encourage women to take ownership of their reproductive health by transforming the management of their health to one that increases self-efficacy, and promotes wholeness.
Moreover, The Afiya Center aims to end the cycle of disease and poverty disparities among marginalized women through empowerment and re-education. It is believed by empowering these women and equipping them with tools to generate wealth, they are able to transform their lives and lives of those within the communities they serve.
The Afiya Center is unique in that it is one of the very few non- profit reproductive justice organizations in North Texas founded and directed by women of color. Committed to creating an atmosphere where women’s experiences are the focal point, The Afiya Center addresses the unique needs of women, increases awareness and advocates around policies that directly impact the lives of women. In addition, there is a special emphasis on the experiences of marginalized women affected by HIV/AIDS and poverty. While many may not be familiar with the term,Reproductive Justice, The Afiya Center since its inception swiftly identified the intersectionality that exist between Reproductive Justice and structural power inequalities.
